Six fuel mix-ups, all fixed at the roadside

Our mobile workshops run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Petrol and diesel drains start from £120, and we give you a fixed price on the phone before we set off.

The wrong fuel in the tank

The wrong fuel changes how your engine lubricates and burns. These are the fixes we carry out at the roadside.

Petrol in a diesel car

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol behaves like a solvent and strips that lubrication away. Run the engine and the pump grinds itself, sending tiny metal shavings through the fuel rail and into the injectors.

We drain the tank completely and flush the lines before that damage happens, then refill with fresh diesel and restart your engine.

Diesel in a petrol car

A petrol engine lights its fuel with a spark; diesel needs heat and high compression. Diesel in a petrol tank coats the spark plugs in unburnt oil, so the engine misfires, smokes, loses power and stalls.

It is usually less destructive than petrol in a diesel, but it still needs a thorough low-pressure flush to clear the oil out of the lines and restore the correct firing.

Water in the fuel tank

Water gets in from contaminated storage cans, condensation or flooding. It doesn’t mix with fuel and sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel pickup sits. In a diesel it causes rust and can crack the injector tips; in a petrol engine it stalls the car.

We use water-separating extraction kit to draw all the moisture out, clean the tank and dry the fuel lines. We’ll give you a fixed price on the phone.

AdBlue and emissions mix-ups

Modern diesels clean their exhaust with AdBlue, and its filler often sits right next to the fuel filler. These mix-ups need a different chemical treatment from a fuel drain.

AdBlue in the fuel tank

AdBlue is a water-and-urea solution. It is highly corrosive to metal and crystallises as soon as it meets air or heat. Turn the key and it strips the fuel pump of lubrication and leaves hard white crystals that block injectors and pit the fuel lines.

Our AdBlue rescue adds a dedicated chemical wash that dissolves the urea and purges the whole delivery loop before corrosion takes hold.

Diesel in the AdBlue tank

The emissions (SCR) system uses delicate sensors and a ceramic catalyst to clean the exhaust. Diesel in the AdBlue filler coats those sensors, makes the rubber seals swell and break up, and can poison the catalytic converter.

We wash out the AdBlue tank on site and extract the fuel before it can be pumped into the exhaust system. We’ll give you a fixed price on the phone.

Screenwash in the AdBlue tank

Both come in plastic bottles and both fillers sit under the bonnet or behind the fuel flap, so screenwash ends up in the AdBlue tank more often than you would think. Its alcohols and detergents upset the exhaust fluid, blind the NOx sensors and can put the car into a “no restart” limp mode.

We empty the AdBlue tank and clean the sensors to get the emissions system working again. We’ll give you a fixed price on the phone.

What the van does when it gets to you

Instead of a tow to a main dealer, the workshop comes to you. Most cars are back on the road within 45 to 60 minutes of our arrival.

  1. Make it safeWe check the car is somewhere safe and static, and cone it off.
  2. Drain the tankWe suction out the contaminated mixture, all of it.
  3. Flush the linesA full flush of the fuel lines, with a chemical wash for AdBlue.
  4. Refill and restartEnough fresh fuel or AdBlue to prime the system and reach the next pump.
  5. Take it awayThe waste goes to a certified plant for legal recycling.

Before you book a drain

What if I don’t know what went in?

Call and tell us what the pump nozzle or the bottle said, and what the car is doing. We’ll work out what went in with you and give you a fixed price before the van sets off.

Can you help if I’ve broken down on the motorway?

Not on the motorway itself. For safety, we don’t work on motorways, hard shoulders, slip roads or dual carriageways. Have a recovery truck take the car somewhere safe (a filling station, a services car park, a side street or your home) and we’ll meet you there.

Tell us what went in

Call with the make and model, what went in and where the car is. You’ll get a fixed price on the phone and the nearest van on its way.
